Introduction
German citizen, born on 1983 in Esfahan, Iran, Ehsan Ghassemali received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Materials Engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, known as one of the top ranked technical universities in Iran. His studies in the field of Materials Engineering under supervision of the most well-known professors in Iran, made him interested for pursuing extracurricular activities in the field. Through those activities, together with his supervisor, he was succeeded to publish one of the first books in the field of "Nanomaterials" in Farsi. This book (Nanomaterials; Properties, Synthesis & Applications), is one of the references for undergraduate studies in some technical universities.
Extra curriculum activities
Ehsan was also successful in either organizing or being in the executive committee of several scientific Symposiums, Conferences and Workshops in related fields. He was honored to be awarded the first medal for the 3rd Heat Treatment contest held in Sharif University of Technology, 2008. He was also the manager and organizer of the 4th Heat Treatment contest in Iran, which was acknowledged by ministry of Sciences, Researches & Technology of Iran.
Postgraduate studies/work experience - Awards
Advanced Thermomechanical processing of steels
During his Masters studies he got the passion to work on metal forming. Ehsan developed an advanced thermomechanical process for grain refinement of steels, through which he succeeded in increasing the ultimate tensile strength of the a low carbon steel up to 4 times, without a significant decrease in its elongation.
After finishing his Master's studies, Ehsan was employed as a research assistant at the Steel Institute. Analyzing the previously done projects in a local steel making factory was one of his main activities.
After a short working experience in research institutes on 2009 he was awarded the SINGA prestigious scholarship award for Ph.D. studies at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. The Ph.D. research project was a collaboration with local industries, through which, in 2011, he got the "Best Research Project Award" from the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology (SIMTech).
Throughout his studies, Ehsan Ghassemali has published over 20 scientific articles in international well-reputed journals and conferences, as well as a volume of the Handbook of Manufacturing Engineering and Technology, published by Springer.
Moving from Asia to Germany and then Sweden
After receiving his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Dr. Ghassemali moved to Germany to establish his life; there he worked as a self-employee consultant. At the beginning of 2014 he moved to Sweden to pursue his research in a result-oriented team-based environment at Jönköping University with a very close collaboration with local and European/Asian industries.
Research focus
Dr. Ehsan Ghassemali’s recent research has focused on development of cast alloys with the main focus on the relationship between their microstructure and mechanical properties. Having extensive experience in electron microscopy, Dr. Ghassemali is active in development of new techniques for analytical microscopic studies in metallurgy (2D/3D EBSD, EDS, WDS, In-situ, and/or Correlative microscopic studies). All the above mentioned competence are required for Alloy Development, which is the current research focus for Ehsan!
Particular focus is on conducting 2D and 3D electron-microscopy research and in-situ investigation of the mechanical behavior of cast alloys using Electron Backscattered Diffraction (EBSD) technique. A better understanding of how industrial alloys respond to external stimuli can create strategies for developing materials with desired properties from the micro-scale up. Specifically, material properties during the manufacturing process are studied, including crack initiation/propagation and failure analysis in micro-scale. The research is conducted in close cooperation with European industry.
More specifically, areas of interest for Dr. Ghassemali also include high-entropy alloys, macro/micro-forming processes, testing and characterization techniques, grain refinement techniques, heat-treatment, modern physical and mechanical metallurgy, molecular dynamics, and finite element simulation.
Teaching
Besides research, Dr. Ghassemali is coordinating and lecturing a 6 credits course on "Manufacturing Technology" (including Thermodynamics) for undergraduate students as well as a 6 credits online Master course on "Failure Analysis" and "Materials Testing and Characterization". He is also coordinator, lecturer and examiner of a 15 credits course for a Master level course "Materials in product and manufacturing technology".
Ehsan has been also acting as the leader for an educational project (Foundry Master); Jan. 2018 - Oct. 2019.
He has been receiving several prizes including PED prize for excellence in course administration and organization as well as SPARK award for the best research collaboration of the year in Jönköping University, 2019.
